About Us
The Alcove Youth Shelter was founded in 1979 to serve as an emergency shelter for runaway and homeless youth. Currently, The Alcove serves not only runaway and homeless youth but youth that are in the custody of the state (Department of Family and Children Services or Department of Juvenile Justice).
The Alcove operates using a therapeutic milieu, which means that all aspects of placement at The Alcove are considered to be therapeutic, beginning from the first introduction, chores, recreational activities, group, family, and individual counseling as well as shelter policy and procedures.
The focus of The Alcove is to provide preventative and solution focused care. The Solution Focused approach places an emphasis on a client’s strengths.
The Alcove, Inc. provides care to girls ages 10 to 17 years of age. The youth we serve have Mild to Moderate and/or occasional serious emotional and/or behavioral management problems that interfere with their ability to function. Our residents come to us in three ways Parental, Department of Family and Children Services, and Department of Juvenile Justice.
Residential services are designed to provide a structure and supportive setting in which the assessment, treatment and safety needs of the child are met. Admissions are accepted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are “committed to being the regional leader by-example of demand-driven progressive services to strengthen and protect youth and families.” We are a private non-profit agency committed to serving and enriching family life.
The Alcove provides individual, group and family support services. We strive to build self-esteem, independence, positive outlook and the ability to make responsible decisions. We are dedicated to giving children and families the chance they deserve.
We believe that by providing a resource for teens and families facing the stress of everyday life we will in turn help strengthen the communities we serve. Stronger families equals a stronger community.
The Alcove is operated by a board of directors and is licensed by the Georgia Department of Human Resources.
